Armwrestling, also known as “hand wrestling,” is an emerging sport that demands strength, technique and explosive power. It has grown rapidly worldwide in recent years and is popular among people of all ages and backgrounds.

The Hong Kong Armwrestling Federation (HKAF) is the only officially recognised member of the World Armwrestling Federation (WAF) and the Asian Armwrestling Federation (AAF) , both operating under the auspices of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). WAF was established in 1977 and has since developed a comprehensive competition system, including the annual Armwrestling World Cup, Asian Championships and World Championships.

Armwrestling will make its debut at the first Asian Youth Paralympic Games in Uzbekistan (2025) , and WAF is actively campaigning for its inclusion in the 2032 Brisbane Summer Paralympics.

International Recognition & Official Status

HKAF is the only recognised member in Hong Kong of the following international organisations:

  • World Armwrestling Federation (WAF)
  • Asian Armwrestling Federation (AAF)

Both WAF and AAF are international sports organisations recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). HKAF is actively applying to become an Observer Member of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC) , with the long‑term goal of promoting Armwrestling as an official sport in the Asian Games and Olympic Games.

Sports Development Framework

HKAF adopts a three‑tier core development pathway to ensure a complete growth journey for athletes from grassroots to elite:

HKAF places strong emphasis not only on elite events but also on youth, senior and para / disability categories. We are committed to providing sporting opportunities for athletes with disabilities. We regularly organise regional invitational events, fun days, Hong Kong Open Championships and Greater Bay Area exchange events. These activities aim to identify outstanding athletes who can represent Hong Kong in international competitions, including the Olympic Games.

Our Mission

  • Strengthen elite training and move towards the Olympic goal
  • Promote the popularity of Armwrestling and make the sport accessible to more citizens
  • Provide professional training and guidance and establish a coach and referee registration system
  • Build partnerships with schools, community organisations and commercial entities
  • Nurture elite athletes to represent Hong Kong in international competitions and bring honour to the city

Future Outlook

HKAF will continue to work closely with international organisations, strengthen its roots in the community, promote a “Healthy Hong Kong” sports culture, make Armwrestling an important part of our local sports landscape, and inject new momentum into Hong Kong’s sports development.
